During today’s Skype session Ayana and I started things off with talk about Thanksgiving. We were unable to Skype last week but I had asked Ayana over Facebook if Thanksgiving was celebrated in Japan which I was surprised to find is not. Ayana asked about Thanksgiving feasts and I learned that she never ate turkey before. After Ayana quizzed me on the vocab, which I haven’t really studied yet, I got about half right. She asked me questions like what I find easy about Japanese, what do I do to remember the kanji and vocabulary. We got into talking about anime for a short while.

I’m getting better at remembering to use the newer sentence structures during the conversation though it still takes me a while to get out the whole sentence now. And I stumble over a lot of words but I just keep telling myself practice makes perfect. I know I’m nowhere near proficient but I like that I am able to keep up with and participate in a conversation in mostly Japanese. Though it’s hard when I finish because I have to really keep in mind that I need to speak to my family in English, though I can get away with throwing some basic Japanese into my sentences.

During this skype Session with Ayumi, She helped me practice transitive and intransitive verbs. She had made special flash cards to help me practice. We had also talked about her travel plans in detail in February and she had asked where everything was located in Hawaii. We also discussed travel plans as well as her plans for the next weekend. What went well was that we were finally able to use facetime instead of Skype, resulting in no lag as well as disconnects. I think I still need to improve on my speaking skills as well as my listening skills. I think overall this skype session went well because I was having difficulty with transitive and intransitive verbs but she had helped me better memorize them.

During this Skype session we started off with a vocabulary test. I was very grateful that I had started studying earlier for the vocab test coming up. Ayana-san then asked about school, work and marriage using the new sentence structures. It is still hard to use the new structures when trying to come up with what to say on the spot but I feel I did a better job of it than last time.

I still need work on my listening skills. Like my last session I tend to focus on certain words than get lost because I didn’t get the entire question. Unlike the listening I’m not sure ahead of time what I’m looking for in the sentences so it can get a bit confusing but good awakening and practice. I also feel I need to still open up a bit and start asking more questions as well.

During this skype session we actually talked about school work for a bit.  I had questions on the transitive and intransitive verbs.  When I asked Ryuusuke, he also said that it was hard because these terms are used casually instead of formally.  Just like how we did not learn in our English classes what transitive and intransitive verbs, they did not learn about them with Japanese either.  It’s something we already know, we just did not know they had a category for it.

We also talked about Japanese music and movies again.  It is kind of hard for me to find Japanese PVs on youtube but I will find it some way :)

This session was particularly different compared to my past two sessions.  The other two sessions were more about getting to know each other, I guess you can say we were having a fun friendship conversation.  This session was focused on learning about the Japanese language.  Ryuusuke had a copy of Chapter 2 in our text book and he was trying to test me on my knowledge.  He was impressed with what I have already learned and felt like going through the textbook was a waste of time.  Instead of going through what our textbook has, he suggested that he was going to teach me casual conversational words.  I thought it was pretty strange that he said my textbook knowledge was good.  I personally think that my textbook knowledge is not so good and I understand more of the casual language.  But I trust him on what he observed about me and just listened to what he wanted to inform me on.  He suggested I listen and watch lots of Japanese movies and music.  I would have to orally say every sentence so I can get more comfortable with it and that’s how I will improve on my speaking skills.  I appreciate all the advice that he gave me during this session and will try to watch and listen to as many Japanese movies and music as I possibly can.

During this Skype session we spoke about things I wanted to go in Japan and what kinda things are here in Hawaii that I would recommend here in Hawaii. I have a hard time remembering to say some of the things we learned suck as つもり or よてい. I’m learning to focus on the main words in a sentence to get the main idea but I still get lost a lot of the time. We also talked about the upcoming holidays such as Halloween and Christmas as well as the seasons. I also realize I need to work on memorizing a lot of the words and verbs we have in the book.

During this Skype session, Chihiro-san tried teaching me about the usage of  てしまう.  She gave me some examples, and even had me translate a few sentences.  From that lesson, we moved onto reviewing how to express the things you like.  From there, I introduced to her my family, and lastly, she helped me study for the upcoming Kanji quiz.  Everything was going smoothly, and it was a very beneficial Skype session.  Although, like always, the video started to lag and it was hard to hear each other, but we still managed to hear each other enough to answer each other’s questions.  Compared to our last session, this one was more Japanese concept related which I liked, since I forgot a lot of thing over the weekend.  Always looking forward to the next Skype session!

This is my third Skype session with Ayumi and so far we have learned a lot about each other. She really articulates her speech so that I am able to understand and comprehend what she is saying. There are a few culture differences that I noticed during this session. I noticed that she has two phones, one phone strictly for her parents and another cell phone meant for her friends. I thought it was interesting that she had multiple phones because it would considered strange in America to have more than one phone. I also noticed that Ayumi was very organized and with her time schedules, I am not sure if it just her or if it was a culture thing. There were no difficulties throughout the session, in fact I noticed my listening and speaking skills are starting to improve dramatically because of the constant conversing and messaging in Japanese.

My third Skype session with Chihiro-san was more of a review session.  We also talked about things we liked and wanted to do, which was learning more of the Korean Language.  I told her how I did on my oral test, and recited it to her. After that, she gave me a little insight on certain places that I would be going to next year when I study abroad.  Towards the end of the Skype session, the video was choppy and it was hard to hear her, but fortunately, that didn’t last too long.   Before saying our goodbye’s, Chihiro-san tested me on some vocabulary words, which I did fairly well on.  Some of the words that I was quizzed on were taught by Chihiro-san herself and I am very grateful for her taking the time to teach me all these new things.  Because it is our third session, I feel much more comfortable with her and I see her as a good friend of mine.  Even if it may be our last Skype session (according to the paper) I would still like to Skype with her every now and then.
